We have prepared a checklist of actions you can take to support your eye health. 

Lifestyle: The lifestyle choices that will positively benefit our bodies are also benefiting our eyes. From sleep to food, all of the factors impact the health of your eyes. 

  • Get regular comprehensive dilated eye exams
  • Know your family’s eye health history (if someone has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition, as some are hereditary)
  • Eat right
    • Dark leafy greens: spinach, kale, or collard greens
    • Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, albacore tuna, trout, and halibut
    • Eggs, nuts, beans, and other nonmeat protein sources
    • Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
    • Oysters and pork
    • Stay hydrated
    • Avoid excessive coffee consumption
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Quit smoking/never start
  • Exercise 
    • Improves blood circulation, which improves oxygen levels to the eyes and the removal of toxins
  • Get a good night’s sleep
    • Rest will support the health of your eyes
  • Go out into the fresh air 

Safe Eye Handling: Eyes should be handled with care and prior to touching eyeballs here are some essential steps to follow to avoid the possibility of eye infections.

  • Wash your hands before putting in or taking out your contacts and cleanse your contact lenses properly to avoid infection
  • Wash your hands before touching your eye
  • Using lubricating eye drops to soothe irritated, dry eyes
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Take contacts out each evening prior to sleep

Cosmetics: Many love to showcase their eyes, but there are basic steps you can follow to make sure the makeup that makes your eyes pop doesn’t harm them too. 

  • Stick to safe, quality products if you like eye makeup
  • Throw away old makeup
  • Check Makeup expiration dates
  • Never share your face towel

Work Protection Gear: Eyes do a great job of protecting us from danger in our lives, but they need protection from the world too!

  • Practice workplace eye safety 
  • Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home (painting, yard work, and home repairs)
  • Wear sunglasses that block 99 percent-100 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation

Technology: Technology is a major part of our daily lives and there are ways to lessen the toll that tech takes on your eyes. 

  • Avoid excessive exposure to computer screens
  • Keep your computer screen within 20”-24” of your eye
  • Keep the top of your computer screen slightly below eye level
  • Adjust lighting to minimize glare on the screen
  • Blink frequently 
  • Look away from the computer screen at least every 20 minutes and gaze at a distant object (at least 20 feet away) for at least 20 seconds
